What Broken Arrow is
Broken Arrow is a modern-warfare real-time strategy game — USA versus Russia. There is no base building: instead you bring a deck (your army) into the match, choose a faction and two doctrines beforehand, and deploy units from that deck in real time. Everything you'll field is decided by the deck you built.
If you're coming from Wargame or WARNO, note the differences: no veterancy or star levels, armor is directional (front/side/rear/top), and penetration is Kinetic or Explosive — not the soft/hard system.
How a match works
You earn supply points over time (roughly 300 per minute) and spend them to deploy units from your deck onto the map. You capture and hold objective zones to boost income and win, while reinforcing, resupplying and repairing what's already deployed.
Units are consumable: when they die you re-buy them from your deck with supply. So a match is a constant flow of spending points, trading efficiently, and holding ground — not a one-time army you build and forget.
Building your first deck
Pick a faction, then two doctrines (specializations) that unlock your unit pool. Fill the deck within the 9,500–10,000-point budget. Keep it balanced: recon, infantry with anti-tank, fighting vehicles, anti-air, artillery/support and logistics. Don't blow the whole budget on a few expensive tanks.
Use our in-browser builder to assemble and validate a deck, or browse the community deck showcase to download ready lists and study them. When you're ready to optimize, the meta-decks guide explains what makes a deck strong.
Combat basics
Recon wins fights before they start — whoever sees first shoots first. Keep scouts forward and your shooters behind them. Armor is directional, so angle tanks and protect their flanks; a unit strong head-on dies fast from the side or rear. Check whether an enemy is weak to Kinetic (sabot, autocannons) or Explosive (ATGM, HEAT, artillery) before committing.
Air is deadly and skipping anti-air loses games outright — always pack AA. Optics, stealth and ECM matter too: you can browse every unit's exact stats in our unit database.
The economy in one rule
Your income drops to zero once about half your deck's total cost is deployed at once. So don't try to field your whole army — your sustainable size is roughly half the deck. Hold objective zones for extra income, trade up, and pull damaged high-value units back to base to recoup points instead of feeding them.
Upload your .dek to our economy analyzer to see your sustainable deploy value, and read the economy & upkeep guide for the full mechanic.
Beginner mistakes to avoid
No anti-air. All tanks and no infantry to hold cities. No recon, so you get shot first every time. No logistics, so your income and resupply dry up. And overspending — a deck full of expensive cards you can never deploy together.
Fix these and you'll already beat most new players. From there, read the tier list to find cost-efficient units, check the live Meta page for what's winning now, and look up any player's match history to learn from stronger opponents.
How to play Broken Arrow: your first match step by step
Here is how to play Broken Arrow from scratch in one match: 1) before the battle pick a faction and two doctrines and build a 9,500–10,000-point deck; 2) at the start push recon and grab the nearest objective zones uncontested; 3) put infantry in cities and forests and keep AA up to deny enemy aircraft; 4) hold zones for income and trade efficiently, pulling damaged high-value vehicles back to base; 5) never deploy your whole army at once — your sustainable ceiling is roughly half the deck's cost.
You win on points from destroying the enemy and holding zones; in the new Conquest mode points tick from territory control — see the dedicated Conquest guide. Your first games are easier on a ready deck from the showcase, and you learn fastest by reviewing your own match history.
Beginner FAQ
Which faction should a beginner play — USA or Russia? They are balanced: the USA is slightly easier thanks to airpower and recon, Russia leans on armor and cheap mass. Full breakdown in the USA-or-Russia guide.
Do I have to bring anti-air? Yes — without AA enemy aircraft decide the match one-sidedly. Where do I get a ready deck? From the community showcase (.dek download) or build your own in the builder. How many points in a deck? Between 9,500 and 10,000 — the game blocks anything lower.
